ALLIUM BREEDER (fulltime)

innovative in developing new varieties of onion and bunching onion

JOB DESCRIPTION

Stationed at our trial and demotration farm in Songjiang District of Shanghai, you will be part of an international team of Allium breede based in the Netherlands and abroad that cove the global onion markets. Your focus, however, will be on the onion and bunching onion types grown in East Asia.

Your most important activities are the establishment and implementation of breeding programs and the planning, organization and evaluation of breeding trials in China as well as abroad. Having selected the onion and bunching onion material of superior performance for targeted markets, you are respoible for the reproduction of the selected bulbs and plants into seed on our farm facility in Shanghai. You coordinate cage productio and small cage crosses with the farm manager, which include cultivation practices, pollination, seed harvest, seed cleaning and packaging. Also data recording of the research results in software applicatio is part of your activities. Furthermore, you assist colleague breede with other Allium projects according the requirements and you have exteive contacts with colleagues in the Netherlands as well as abroad.

You coider it a challenge to convert knowledge in real product innovation. It is of importance that you are customer- and result focused. You think creatively in order to improve breeding processes and to advance our position with market appropriate varieties. Challenges are for you a strong motivation for innovation and creativity. You have eye for detail, a practical approach and you are tenacious.

QUALIFICATIO

Training and education in plant breeding, with a bachelor or master degree in plant breeding or agronomy is required. Knowledge in onio and/or bunching onion and breeding experience is a plus. Basic knowledge in the fields of pathology, crop management and marker technology is preferred. You should have excellent communication and inter-peonal skills, organizational ability, basic computer skills, and be an independent and self-motivated worker. You must be able to communicate in Chinese and English both verbally and in writing. To fulfil this position properly frequent travelling, within China as well as abroad, is required, including long periods outdoo in warm field conditio. You must be able to work with multi-function teams including seed production, marketing and biotechnology specialists.
